Women, a strong presence in the port

From the end of the 18th century, the Cambrils fishing community settled around the Port Tower. Women played a key role in this community; as well as looking after the home, women were also present at the harbour, mending nets, unloading fish, hanging out clothes to dry or selling the fish, among many other tasks.

Today, the net-menders still come to the Esplanada de les Moreres, situated in front of you, to mend their nets by hand, with chair, netting hook and needle, just as their mothers and grandmothers used to do.

The construction in 1947 of the cart or wharf helped the construction and caulking of the boats.

The shipbuilding industry

Having a safe place to anchor from the 1920s onwards was truly a blessing for the fishermen. It was at that time that oars and sails were being replaced by engine power.

Those first motor boats had a large draught and could no longer be taken out of the water and pulled up on the beach. There was a need both to have a port and to modernise the fleet, with local shipwrights playing a crucial part in the latter. The winch or dry dock, built in 1947, provided a valuable aid for boat building and caulking.
