The fish market and auctions
The fish market is the building where the fishermen take fish to be sold. The market has a fish delivery area, an auction room, a preparation area and a dispatch area. On the first floor, the building houses the offices and meeting/training rooms of the Fishermen’s Guild. What’s more, the fish market lays on a tour for visitors to watch the fish auction.
Auctions are held twice a day: in the morning for oily fish, and in the afternoon for white fish.
Auctions are held twice a day: in the morning for seine-caught oily fish, and in the afternoon for white fish caught using small boats or trawlers. A downward bidding technique is used at the auction, i.e. each crate of fish has a starting price that goes down until a fishmonger or wholesaler buys it.

Collaboration among equals
Cambrils Fishermen’s Guild dates back to the eighteenth century and the religious guilds of Sant Andreu and Sant Pere, Sant Elm and the Verge dels Dolors of the parish of Santa Maria, situated in the old town of Cambrils because of pirate attacks. In 1756, doctor Pau Masí and surgeon Manuel Borja attended the guild members and their families in case of illness. In 1773, among other things, the guild had to take care of pirates’ prisoners, attend the sick and provide financial aid for those who were declared unfit after working as fishermen.
In 1895 the Cambrils Fishermen’s Society was created for ships’ masters and on 29th October 1905, the Cambrils Fishing Industry Union came into being, grouping together crew members and sailors. In 1924, Cambrils fishermen joined forces under the Cambrils Fishermen’s Society, which succeeded in completing work on the Fishermen’s Cooperative in 1931. Initially, this society’s job was to provide welfare and health assistance, but with the passage of time it widened its scope of action to include the management of fish sales, administration of the fish market and other social and cultural tasks. Cambrils Fishermen’s Society went on to change its name to Fishermen’s Cooperative. It is now called Cambrils Fishermen’s Guild.
